Sports in the City

Running. Biking. Lifting weights. It gets really old, really fast...
But exercise doesn't have to be boring! There are ways to exercise without even knowing it! Sports are a great way to have fun with old friends, and meet some new ones, and all the while burn calories. You can play by yourself, play with your kids, or even make a team in your neighborhood. We've found some cool local opportunities for you- and anyone else you know- your brothers and sisters, and children. City of Philadelphia Department of Parks and Recreation

Baseball:
The department of recreation welcomes all non-professional players to learn the game of baseball. Players should be residents of the City, but non-residents can obtain a waiver to play. To find out more how to get involved, contact the Baseball Committee Staff-Chairman, Eric Rudy at 215-685-2220



Swimming: 
The Department of Recreation has more than 70 outdoor pools and 5 programmed indoor pools at local Rec centers across the city. To find one near you, click here to find yoru local rec center.





Basketball:
Philly Parks & Recreation runs basketball leagues for boys and girls across the city. There are seven city divisions, managed by staff-chairpersons. Teams must be registered at a local recreation facility, through their staff-chairperson in order to compete in citywide tournaments. Sorry, but non-residents are not eligible to participate. Fishing:
With nearly 34 miles of waterways, Fairmount Park offers tons of fishing opportunities in its streams, creeks or  even the Schuylkill River. Before casting your line, though get a fishing license and remember to follow the City's fishing laws!




Golf:

Each course has unique characteristics that help you create a awesome memories and experiences, no matter how good you are at golf! Each course is conveniently located in Philadelphia, is open from morning to late afternoon, and has lots of cool features.



Indoor Soccer: 
The program normal begins in early January and is open to Boys and Girls 19 and under. The purpose of this program is to provide a fun recreation experience in a safe and healthy environment, to henjoy learning and playing the game and to teach the skills of soccer while encouraging sportsmanship and fair play. This program is organized and operated by the Philadelphia Parks & Recreation Indoor Soccer Committee. A team may enter by contacting a member of this committee or your local Recreation facility. Outdoor Soccer:
It is the goal of Philadelphia Parks & Recreation Outdoor Soccer League to provide an enjoyable, safe and physically beneficial activity for youth of Philadelphia. Learning and development of skills, appreciation of the game and healthy competition are encouraged. The league normally starts in the fall, starting sometime after Labor Day and finishing up just before Christmas. Tumbling:
Tumbling is a sport very similar to gymnastics. The big difference is that tumbling is more about learning skills on the floor, such as rolling, cartwheeling, and handstands, among other things. There are separate classes for boys and girls interested in learning how to tumble. There classes are also divided by level Beginner( just starting out), Intermediate (can do some tricks, and have taken a tumbling class before), Advanced (have taken multiple classes and can easily perform many of skills required) and Open skill (classes for anyone- all are welcome!) Skateboarding:
There are 4 skateboarding parks in Philadelphia overseen by Philadelphia Parks & Recreation. They even host some skateboarding events like the Philly Cup Skateboard Series. The Philly Cup Skateboard Series is a new event consisting of four competitions at various skateparks throughout the city. Participants compete in age groups and earn points at each event, based on how they finish. The more events they enter, the better their chances of winning the title. After the final competition of the year, the top point earner in each age group will be presented with the “Philly Cup”. Competition is open to all ages from 7 to 70. Our skate parks are located at:

Races and Other Events: Philadelphia Parks & Recreation organizes many races and multi-sport events every year. The biggest is the Blue Cross Broad Street Run, which occurs the first Sunday in May. They also organize youth races and events. The Department partners with TriYouthalon to conduct Triathlons (event where contestants swim, bike & run) and Duathlons (run, bike, & run) in various sections of Fairmount Park. The events are open to youth 7-16 years old and offer age appropriate distances. Youth compete in age groups and can select the triathlon or duathlon events. These events provide a way for children to participate in physically active competition and visit several local park systems.


Philadelphia Sports Network

"Philadelphia Sports Network is the largest organization for recreational adult sports leagues in Center City. PSN’s Leagues are a great way to meet new people and network, all while playing sports in convenient Center City locations! With tons of different leagues, there is something for everyone. Sign up with a team of friends and co-workers, with a small group and be kept on the same team, or by yourself. There are no membership fees! Simply pay for the sports you want to play!     • Fees: Per Team - $450-$650; Individually - $50 - $95
    • Fees Include: Six or seven games of regular season; Single elimination playoff tournament; One Fruit of the Loom t-shirt per player on the waiver (limit 15); Prizes for Winners; League administration; Long-sleeve champion t-shirts; Drink and food specials at the sponsor bar; $20 per game ref fee not included
