Sports in the City
Running. Biking. Lifting weights. It gets really old, really fast...But exercise doesn't have to be boring! There are ways to exercise without even knowing it! Sports are a great way to have fun with old friends, and meet some new ones, and all the while burn calories. You can play by yourself, play with your kids, or even make a team in your neighborhood. We've found some cool local opportunities for you- and anyone else you know- your brothers and sisters, and children. Check out some of the resources below to find ways to get moving in your community! We also linked some more cool sites on the Extras page. For more information, be sure to check them out.

Philly Parks & Recreation runs basketball leagues for boys and girls across the city. There are seven city divisions, managed by staff-chairpersons. Teams must be registered at a local recreation facility, through their staff-chairperson in order to compete in citywide tournaments. Sorry, but non-residents are not eligible to participate. Outdoor Soccer:
It is the goal of Philadelphia Parks & Recreation Outdoor Soccer League to provide an enjoyable, safe and physically beneficial activity for youth of Philadelphia. Learning and development of skills, appreciation of the game and healthy competition are encouraged. The league normally starts in the fall, starting sometime after Labor Day and finishing up just before Christmas. For information on how to get involved with outdoor soccer, reach out to Lonnie Cohen at 215-685-2709.

Tumbling:
Tumbling is a sport very similar to gymnastics. The big difference is that tumbling is more about learning skills on the floor, such as rolling, cartwheeling, and handstands, among other things. There are separate classes for boys and girls interested in learning how to tumble. There classes are also divided by level Beginner( just starting out), Intermediate (can do some tricks, and have taken a tumbling class before), Advanced (have taken multiple classes and can easily perform many of skills required) and Open skill (classes for anyone- all are welcome!) For Girls Tumbling, get in touch with Stephanie Gradel at 215-685-9886. For Boy's Tumbling, contact Donnel Martin at 215-685-3551
Skateboarding:
There are 4 skateboarding parks in Philadelphia overseen by Philadelphia Parks & Recreation. They even host some skateboarding events like the Philly Cup Skateboard Series. The Philly Cup Skateboard Series is a new event consisting of four competitions at various skateparks throughout the city. Participants compete in age groups and earn points at each event, based on how they finish. The more events they enter, the better their chances of winning the title. After the final competition of the year, the top point earner in each age group will be presented with the “Philly Cup”. Competition is open to all ages from 7 to 70. Our skate parks are located at:
- Carmella Playground 2100 Wakeling Street, Philadelphia, PA 19124
